GUADELOUPE AND ITS ISLANDS

Guadeloupe (the archipelago of guadeloupe) is located in the caribbean, in the eastern part of central america at latitude 16° north and at 60° longitude west.

It is 7000 kilometers away from the european continent, and it also belongs to the west indian arc.This archipelago gathers seven inhabited islands for an area of 1780 kilometers, for a global population of 440 000 inhabitants (according to the insee january 2003).

It has two main islands ( Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre ) both shaping off what is commonly called «la guadeloupe proprement dite).They are linked by two bridges : the bridge of la gabarre and the alliance bridge wiich allows the crossing of an arm of the sea called « rivière salée » (salted river).

Five others islands are called the dependences. They are called : the saintes, the island of la desirade, marie-galante, st marteen and st barthelemy
